Welcome to Dutch Politics in English! My name is Justin-Paul Sammons, and as the title suggests, this blog is for those who are interested in the learning about fascinating world of Dutch politics, but who do not speak the (also fascinating) Dutch language.
What can you expect? Each weekend, I’ll post a link to a podcast which will provide an overiew of the key events of the previous week in Dutch politics.
My main sources of information include the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad, the podcasts NOS Met Het Oog Op Morgen, EO Dit is de Dag, AVROTROS Kamerbreed, and also the vodcasts of VPRO Buitenhof and the NOS Journaal, the news of the main public broadcaster.
I live in Australia, but my formative years (i.e. teenage and early 20s) were spent in the Netherlands, from 1997-2005. This was a time of significant change in the Dutch political scene — change which continues to resonate today.
Disclaimer: I am a member of GroenLinks, the Dutch Green party. However, I am not here to promote the party, nor to defend its actions, especially if I happen to disagree with them. Inevitably, there will be some progressive-left bias on this site, but I make no apology for this.
